With high-definition's vastly increasing popularity the demand for good affordable HD players is also rapidly increasing. Thus, Sony, being the vanguard in pushing the Blue-Ray format brings us the BDP-S300. The main feature of the S300 is clearly the ability to play BR media but it is also capable of serving as an upscaling DVD player and offers music CD playback and Image Viewing making it quite a versatile device. Enthusiasts will notice however that the S300 doesn't include support for SACD media and can't decode high-resolution soundtrack formats like Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio. Connectivity wise there's an HDMI output for 1080p HD video along with high resolution audio. There's also a component video output that can output videos in high-def and legacy standard def S-Video and composite outputs. For digital audio aside for HDMI there are optical and coaxial digital audio outputs while analog audio is supported by a 5.1 multichannel output. Blue-Ray as all HD formats provides an immense quality improvement to standard definition and the S300 does very well at showing this both when it comes to displaying true HD content and when upscaling older non-HD content. The true downside of the BR format is poor operational performance due to lengthy loading times which prevent easy access to additional features and hinder the viewing experience. Overall aside for the common responsiveness issues this is generally a good product for those seeking a HD device.
